Acai Berry Supplements and Benefits – Fighting Free Radicals

Most have been highly localized and, until recently, not readily available to the public. Times are changing. The opening of world markets has made these rare products more widely available.

Consumers concerned with health and wellness are looking for natural foods that control free radicals, contain antioxidants, taste great and are organic. Acai berries are used locally as additions to cereals, eaten raw, or used in juices and teas. Berries shipped outside of local regions are generally available as ingredients in healthy juices.

This berry contains Omega-6, Omega-9 and nearly all other essential fatty acids that decrease incidents of cancer and cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks. Other benefits include a bolstered immune system and general good health. In addition, one serving of Acai contains protein equivalent to one egg.

Another important emerging berry is the Goji, or Chinese Wolfberry, which has been considered both a nutrimental food and a medicinal plant in Asian cultures for over 1900 years. The Goji berry is dried and eaten as a snack food or used in cooking. The Tibetan or Himalayan Goji is the most sought after and claimed to be picked only in the wild.

With the emerging emphasis on organically grown foods, China has implemented an organic growing program. Commercially grown Goji berry prices are beginning to come down while quality remains high. This makes them an excellent choice for people on the go who want to have healthy snacks at hand.

The pomegranate is probably the ugliest fruit on the outside and the most beautiful on the inside. The leathery red/brown outside holds small fruits resembling fields of rubies mixed with honeycombed inner passages. Many a child has sat for hours extracting the jewel-like seeds for their amazing flavor. A native of the tropical regions, this fruit is probably the best known of the exotic fruits. Its antioxidant properties have taken a back seat to its wonderful taste. Pomegranate juice tastes a bit like sweet ripe cherries, and the concentrated juice has been widely used in tropical drinks. Only recently have studies been done that show the incredible powers of this fruit in reducing health risks.

All fruits, berries and vegetables have great nutritional and food value. For people on-the-go who want to maintain the 5-8 servings of antioxidant foods per day, exotic berries, including Acai berry supplements, are a good snack choice. They contain up to five times more antioxidants than any other fruit or vegetable, including much touted prunes and raisins.

Eat More Antioxidantes To Help Improve Your Health

Some of the most powerful preventative medicines in nature are found in the produce section of your local grocery store. Antioxidants and xanthones abound in fruits like mangosteen, blueberries, pineapples, goji berries, sea buckthorn, sour cherries, cranberries, lychee, and star fruits.

You’ve likely heard lots about their health benefits, but what are antioxidants and xanathones, exactly? According to the National Cancer Institute, “Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radical damage may lead to cancer,” (Blot, 1993).

Researchers in Singapore recently discovered that star fruit was unusually high in antioxidants. The funny looking fruit was found to have “over 70 percent of the total polyphenol content of the whole fruit,” (Shui, 2006).

According to Decision News Media in 2006, “The US antioxidant market was estimated to be $370 million in 2005.” It is a booming business that offers many people the potential to consume chemicals that may work to prevent cancer later in life.

Xanathones are highly specific phytochemicals found in just a few specific tropical fruits. The mangosteen, more specifically the rind of the mangosteen fruit, contains over 30 different kinds of xanathones. Some merchants refer to them as “super-antioxidants.”

They are thought to be very potent antioxidants, perhaps the most potent available in nature according to certain researchers. They are heat stable molecules that will not lose their structure when heated, which is beneficial in the metabolic process.

Xanathone manufacturers claim that the chemical compound can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and other circulatory problems, as well as promote an overall sense of health. As of yet, no clinical trials have been completed to back up these claims because the FDA considers xanathones a nutritional supplement and not a medicine.

Whether or not antioxidants and xanathones will keep you from getting a specific disease, modern science simply cannot say. But research does indicate that antioxidants do neutralize certain types of free radicals. Such free radicals are thought to be carcinogens. So, if consuming antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables increases your odds for disease prevention, why wouldn’t you add them to your diet?

Many doctors and nutritionists advocate the use of antioxidants to promote your overall health, so slice up a star fruit and grab a glass of cranberry juice if you want to raise the odds in favor of your long-term health.

Goji Berries

Goji berries have been used as health food for thousands of years. They have a plentiful suppy of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but their real benefit is glyconutrient polysaccharides found only in goji. Goji berries can be eaten dried, fresh, or as juice.

goji juice has a very pleasant tart yet sweet berry flavor. I have yet to meet someone who did not like the flavor of goji juice.

Noni

The noni fruit has a vast list of health benefits ranging from improved energy to better sexual health. The only real problem with noni is that it doesn’t taste good. It is usually eaten as noni juice, and you can mix the noni juice with other fruit juices to make it taste better.

Cherries

Black cherries have a very high antioxidant content. Antioxidants help your body fight free radicals. Cherries are great eaten fresh, in fruit salads, as juice, or cooked. Try not to use sugar with your cherries, though, as you might counter the health benefits.
